Why did you choose to go into the field of
nursing?
Because my
grandmother was killed from a simple procedure, the doctor nicked her aorta and
she bleed to death, that touched me in a way that I wanted to help people and
let them go through what I went through that day. I always have wanted to help
others and make them feel better.
What school did you attend for nursing?
Sullivan in Bogalusa, Louisiana
Is your job easy?
No
Is there a lot of paper work?
Yes there is.
What area in the
hospital do you work?
2 west- telemetry unit
What are your duties and
responsibilities?
Receive report from night shift nurse, go see patients, check
vital signs, go pull medicines, give patients medicines, open nurse notes, get
patients ready for any procedures they have. While doing this you usually are
interrupted about 10-15 times by the phone about orders or family members or
doctors calling to check on patients or about more orders. We chart every 2
hours and check on the patient, move often if something happens. If a patient
leaves the floor for a test and when they return you have to check on them
before they leave and after they come back. There is a lot of work to do when
there is a discharge, or if someone is admitted. Medicines are given all
throughout the day, and even when there are new orders for medicines. Vital
signs are checked every 4 hours unless they are on a cardiac drip then its every
fifteen minutes. The CNA’s give baths and showers, but we assist with these as
well. At times we feed patients if the CNA’s are too busy. We assist with
pulling people up in bed and taking them to the bathroom or putting them on the
bed pan. At the end of the day we give report to the oncoming nurse, we hardly
ever leave on time, because we have to stay late charting.

week?
$450-$500 a week
Do you get paid every week, or every two
weeks?
Every 2 weeks
How much did you make when you first
started?
$400

three different places, and he was at ST. Tammany Parish Hospital. Since then I
had always wanted to work there, because of the way the staff was with him. Also
at the time the uniforms were cool but not anymore.
If there was any other hospital, you would work at which would
it be? Why?
Ochsners in New Orleans, because of all the extensive equipment
and more modern technology they have available.
Why did you choose this
position?
Because I was always interested in how the heart
functions.
How much do you make yearly?
$35,000
How many hours do you get a
week?
40
How many people do you see a day?
4-5 patients, but we see many people from doctors to CNA’s to
